This is the old church near Pu`unene School on the Maui plantation, across the irrigation ditch (in foreground) where teacher and Olympic Coach Soichi Sakamnotto taught kids how to swim. In 1948, one of Coach Sakamoto's boys Bill Smith won Olympic gold medals in the 400 and 800 meter freestyle. Northwest Hawai`i Times contributors Mike Byers (who took the photo) and Ed Ching swam on the University of Hawai`i swim team in 1963 with Coach Sakamoto.
