At left are Ki`i -- images of Hawaiian religion at Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau, a place of refuge built over 500 years ago in Kona on Hawai`i island. A lawbreaker could stay here for protection and be freed by kahuna who specialized in ceremonies of purification. During times of war, those not fighting could also take refuge at this sacred place. Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau is now a National Historic Park.
