This time of year, graduation ceremonies in colleges and universities around the Pacific Northwest include many students from the Hawaiian Islands. The Northwest Hawai`i Times salutes all who persevered and succeeded. Ho`omaika`i!

He was, is and will always be a man of the sea.......a man who was a Waikiki “Beach Boy” when that title was revered and reserved for an elite group of Hawaiians who surfed the breaks off Kuhio Beach and the Natatorium on their “longboards”.....back in those long ago days of the 1940’s and ‘50’s and 60’s when hotels on the beach of Waikiki were few and far between and tourism was in its infancy!

Nā Mana`o Ulu Wale

I read a short news item back on May 2nd which said Haumea Hebenstreit Ho, widow of entertainer Don Ho, was the surprise guest at “The Bothers Cazimero’s 30th and final Lei Day concert at the Shell.”

Holoholo:

It began as a beautifully romantic, fictionalized story about the life and love between a Hawaiian man and woman! Ninety minutes later, it ended up as a very touching, real life love story as PLU student Joe Cassler of Vancouver, WA got on the stage and totally surprised everyone (except a few cast members) but especially fellow PLU student Shelly Furutani of Lihue, Kauai by proposing marriage to her!

Old Hawai`i: Pictures from the Past

This is the Hale`iwa Hotel on the North Shore at Wailua, O`ahu, probably around the end of the 19th century. The photo is from the album of Edith Christophersen, who graduated from Punahou in 1911 and came to Seattle to get credentials as a nurse at Seattle General Hospital. It was sent in by her son Bill Trimingham of Seattle.
