Amazing how quickly the year passes. Here we are, wishing each other Mele Kalikimaka again, so soon! At Northwest Hawai`i Times, we saw our circle widen over the past year. As a newspaper that invites everyone to join in, we find our community steadily growing in several ways: first, as more and more readers discover us and second, as each year brings greater participation from “All who love Hawai`i”, whether it’s in writing stories, taking photos, calling in tips for articles, helping with distribution or sending ads.
As a teacher, I watch students learn, grow and move on, and sometimes they return later, knocking on my office door to tell me about their new job or show me their new baby. Or make a phone call, send a Christmas card or email with an update, and this is very satisfying.
But our work with this newspaper is even more gratifying, if that’s possible. To all who are contributing to our community paper in a variety of ways, you can know that we are also gaining more readers in Hawai`i. One of the significant milestones for Northwest Hawai`i Times over the past year was a request from the University of Hawai`i-Mānoa Library, who asked us to send them our newspaper every month to be part of the Hawaiian Collection. So now in the Islands is a record of what we - our energetic community of Hawai`i transplants up here in the Pacific Northwest – have been doing.
On that happy note, we say Mahalo to everyone who helps us get our newspaper out each month, and especially to our readers, without whom none of this would matter. In this holiday season of 2007, Northwest Hawai`i Times wishes all of you a Mele Kalikimaka!
